Whisky

The fine art of distillation spread to Ireland and Scotland just before the 15th century. The first confirmed written record of whisky in Ireland was in 1405 in which the death of a chieftain was reported. The death was attributed to 'taking a surfeit of aqua vitae' at Christmas. This renaissance-era whisky tasted very raw and was brutal. It was not allowed to age, was very potent and not diluted.
